The SUP it UP for CANCER 2018 After-Party is now in the history books, but it was awesome while it lasted! Even though this was the second year Denni Ruze Productions brought the beat to this event, this one was special.
This year’s after-party was special for two reasons. First, it was the last year that the after-party will be held at Threadgill’s. That’s so sad. Their outdoor venue was utterly perfect for this event! As I understand it, the rising property taxes in downtown Austin make it uneconomical for the owners to keep this location open. Thus, I think they’re shutting it down in November.
The second reason this year was special is because it was the debut of the SUP it UP for CANCER Anthem (Unofficial), music and lyrics by our very own DJ Moe! This was the very first time the song was performed for anyone, and it was quite well received. Everyone had their part: the audience helped sing the “chant” (after a little bit of practice), DJ Moe did the rap vocals, and the chorus was sung by Nancy and Lauren (pictured). DJ Moe pulled out the tambourine, Mrs. DJ Moe (Theresa) grabbed a shaker, and everyone was moving to the great beat of the song! (Special thanks to Lauren for giving us permission to use this photo of her and her daughters.)
About the Anthem
Time to SUP it UP with DJ Moe,
the beast of the breast
has got to go!— Opening line of Anthem
In his remarks, DJ Moe told the audience that this event is very special to him. Because he is a cancer survivor, he’s very supportive of cancer-related events, and donates his DJ services to some of them. Further, there were people in his life who had to fight breast cancer. Not all of them won the battle. Moe said it takes an army to fight cancer, and we are all soldiers in that fight. The lyrics came to him while he was thinking about the event and wanting to do something special. After wrangling with the chord progressions a bit, DJ Moe finally settled on something worthy of the SUP it UP for CANCER 2018 After-Party!
The Story and the BCRC
Each year, the event organizers ask a breast cancer survivor to tell their story. This year, the story was provided by Lauren. After she received “the news” from her doctor, she got hooked up with the Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC). Lauren went on to explain how breast cancer affected her and her family, and how she overcame it with the help of the BCRC. This is such an amazing organization! They provide their services free of charge to anyone affected by breast cancer! How many organizations do you know of that do that?
If you have the means to do so, PLEASE make a donation to the BCRC. They do good work!
Time to Bring the Beat to the SUP it UP for CANCER 2018 After-Party!
It was time to celebrate! Just to be clear, we DO NOT celebrate breast cancer! This thing is a beast, and we need to kill it. We DO celebrate breast cancer survivors. We celebrate everyone battling breast cancer right now, as well as everyone who supports them. And not to ever be forgotten, we certainly remember those who lost the battle, and we celebrate their memory.
Some of the participants really got into the groove! DJ Moe started the set with Swing the Mood, by Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers. Apparently, Lauren’s daughters brought their dancing shoes, and they rocked the house whenever DJ Moe hit that play button! They were awesome! Where do they get that energy? Oh, to be that young again!
DJ Moe enjoyed the crowd as much as they enjoyed him. It seemed like some of the people who participated in the morning paddle board event on Lady Bird Lake avoided the after-party because of the weather. The skies were foreboding and rain threatened. However, even though there was a very brief light shower during the after-party, the weather sure didn’t dampen our spirits!
Everyone seemed to have a great time. For two years in a row, this event was a huge success. I think they topped last year’s contributions by a little bit, so kudos to everyone who participated and/or donated. As you probably know, but I’ll say it again, 100 percent of the proceeds from this event go directly to the BCRC!
Lastly, as for Denni Ruze Productions, we sure hope they have us back next year!
DJ Moe-you were and are awesome in getting the party started and providing a great surprise for us with your wonderful SUP anthem!! We can’t wait to do it again with your help next year!
